Emerald is the May birthstone and gained its name from the Old French word "esmeralde," which translates to "green gemstone." This precious green gem has been valued throughout history and all over the world from the Aztecs of South America to the ancient Egyptians. Emeralds belong to the beryl family and are thus inherently colorless until chromium and vanadium create the sought-after green hue.
